informa Dynamic Question Service - Losses at News International

Publish Date: 23/03/2010

News International's Times Newspapers, publisher of The Times and The Sunday Times, has reported a 60% rise in operating losses to £72m for the 52 weeks ended 28 June 2009.

Emma Thwaites comments on Brand Republic that when you see figures like these, it's not hard to see why Rupert Murdoch is unapologetic in his mission to introduce new revenue streams across his titles. It's interesting to read that Times Newspapers points to advertising sales and marketing activity being more integrated across its two titles. One way for the company to support this further would be through pushing online data capture technologies on their online properties. There's clearly a need to move away from a reliance on print, and the web is the first logical port of call. The flexible collection of data at the front end of a site means that Times Newspapers would be able to capture tactical data to support this integrated activity, such as supporting the advertising and affinity partnership offering. This is a relatively subtle approach that's already proving successful for many brands out there, and for huge companies such as this, the benefits can be huge.
